PMI Kenya’s mentorship program is an initiative designed to provide a platform for more senior members to share their experience and insight with less experienced members to foster professional growth, and grow them in competence and confidence. The mentor provides advice, support, and guidance to help the mentee grow their skills and abilities, as well insight into the workings of different areas of industry and professional practice.

Mentorship Program Goals

  1. Foster professional and personal growth through structured mentorship.
  2. The program supports career advancement by providing guidance and knowledge from experienced mentors, enhancing skills, and building lasting relationships.
  3. Participants gain increased confidence, improved project management skills, and greater career clarity.
  4. Enhance networking opportunities, connecting professionals to a broad network that fosters collaborations and new career opportunities.

Thematic topics for mentorship:

  1. Career development & transitions
  2. Applied project mastery in a specific industry e.g. ICT, Construction, NGO/Development, Health, Finance.
  3. Certification guidance/support
  4. High-performance team leadership

Mentor-Mentee Matching and Program Timeline

The program pairs mentors and mentees based on shared goals and interests. Each partnership works together for an initial five to six months to achieve set mentorship objectives.

Progress is regularly reviewed, and outcomes are documented at the end of the period to ensure accountability and ongoing program improvement.

The aim is to have two or three cohorts over a year. The program recognizes that the relationships created will likely go beyond the six-month period, and pairs can continue to collaborate flexibly after achieving initial goals.

Who can be a Mentor:

Mentors are the key resources that deliver guidance and support to the mentees. To be a mentor, an applicant should fulfil these requirements:

  1. A minimum of five years of industry experience in project management.
  2. Has achieved certification in at least one PMI program.
  3. Member of the PMI Kenya chapter.
  4. Committed to uphold the PMI code of ethics and professional conduct, as well as the code of conduct of the mentorship program.
  5. Experience in coaching people or team leadership.
  6. Willing to provide a CV which includes a referee.

Who can be a Mentee:

The success of mentees is the key focus of the program.  A candidate to be mentee candidate should meet the below requirements:

  1. To be a mentee, an applicant needs to be a paid-up member of the PMI Kenya Chapter.
  2. They must also be committed to their own growth journey.
  3. Mentees must also adhere to the code of ethics and professional conduct espoused by PMI and the code of conduct of the mentorship program.
