PMI is, was, and always will be about volunteers. Founded in 1969 by five volunteers who sought to standardize and promote the project management profession, PMI’s volunteer force, upwards of 11,000 strong, is larger than many other professional membership associations. PMI is dedicated to supporting the volunteers around the globe that make PMI the dynamic organization that it is. Volunteerism is so important to

PMI was added as a Core Value in 2011. Since that time PMI has worked diligently to provide additional support, expanded resources and increased opportunities for leadership development to our volunteers.

The Volunteer Engagement Docket is dedicated to fostering a robust, engaged volunteer community that supports PMI’s mission and initiatives. This docket seeks to recruit, train, and retain volunteers who contribute their expertise to advance PMI’s goals and enhance the value offered to members and the broader project management community.

Volunteerism is at the core of PMI’s success as the leading professional association for project management. PMI Kenya is volunteer-run and it allows you to connect to other project management professionals, develop your professional and leadership skills, and give back to your community.

How to Apply to Existing Volunteer Opportunities

  1. Go to https://volunteer.pmi.org/ and login using your PMI credentials.
    1. If you are not a PMI member or do not have a PMI account, you can create one at https://www.pmi.org/account-registration

Note: Membership is not required to create an account, however you will be required to be a PMI Kenya Chapter Member to get notifications of local volunteer opportunities.

  1. If needed, update your volunteer profile information by clicking on “View and Update Volunteer Profile”.
  2. Select “Find Opportunity”. Select “Kenya Chapter” in the search criteria for local opportunities.
  3. If there are any opportunities of your interest, select the volunteer opportunity.
  4. Apply for the volunteer opportunity selected and follow the hiring process.

If there are no current volunteer opportunities or none that match your interest, update your Volunteer Profile to receive notifications and be considered for future opportunities.

  2. Ensure you select the “Areas of Interest” that match your volunteer aspirations. These will be used as criteria for future notifications.
  3. You will receive a notification once a new volunteer opportunity that matches your interest is posted.

  1. How do I volunteer with PMI Kenya?

PMI Kenya regularly advertises for volunteer positions on the PMI portal and in the groups managed by PMI Kenya. You can apply to any position that interests you.

2. How Do I Get Started?

Click here to see our current volunteer openings. Apply for open positions using VEP at pmi.org. PMI’s Volunteer Engagement Platform (VEP) is a searchable, centralized and integrated volunteer web application and database that is available to current and prospective volunteers. The VEP integrates with PMI’s membership database and improves the process and user experience for volunteers to interact with PMI. You can search for opportunities to volunteer at our local PMI Kenya Chapter or virtually worldwide using VEP.

 

3. Why would I want to volunteer? 

    1. The opportunity to give back to the profession.
    2. Grow a strong professional network with other Project, Program and Portfolio Managers.
    3. Gain and apply Project Management, Business Management and Leadership knowledge and skills.
    4. Earn up to 25 PDUs for re-certification.
    5. Gain a personal sense of achievement and accomplishment.

4. How Much Time is Required?

Volunteer opportunities range from short-term commitments of a few hours to long-term roles. For example, the volunteers at the registration tables before the Chapter meetings are on duty for a few hours, while members of the Board of Directors make a two-year-long commitment. 

 

5. Can I Earn PDUs?

Yes. You can obtain PDUs while volunteering. 

 

6. Do I need to have a PMI certification to become a volunteer?

You are not required to have a certification. You however need to be a chapter member.

 

7. Do I need to be a PMI Kenya Chapter member to become a volunteer?

Yes. This is a benefit for chapter members only.

 

8. I have a student membership with PMI. Can I become a volunteer?

Yes, as long as you are a chapter member.
